WHY LEARN isiZULU?
isiZulu is one of the most popular languages in South African and is spoken by nearly 23 million South Africans. The word ‘zulu’ means heaven or sky and the AmaZulu are the ‘people of heaven’. isiZulu musicians and artists such as the multiple Grammy award winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo, have long dominated the international music scene. The word Ubuntu originates from the isiZulu language and forms part of the cultural values and philosophy of many African nations. Ubuntu is often translated as “I am because we are”. Our course introduces the basics of the isiZulu language and culture, focusing on the practical use of the language and cultural awareness. We will look at practical aspects of the language in order to learn to speak and build listening skills.
